Kent Fire Brigade - Case Study
Kent Fire Brigade is one of the largest brigades in the country and one that thinks on its feet and looks ahead in terms of its data requirements. Together Wireless Logic, ISG, a value added reseller, and Kent Fire Brigade have developed a robust messaging solution that is mounted in the fire appliance (fire engine) with a connection to a multitude of mobile networks to help ensure delivery of messages to the fire fighters in the appliances.
Utilising a messaging solution based on the GPRS network, a solution has been developed with minimum upfront costs using Wireless Logic’s Managed Bearer Services (MAPN), which act as the gateway to the GPRS (2.5G) network, and more importantly directs the appropriate message to the relevant appliance through the firewall. The solution includes routers that securely direct the message through a VPN tunnel to the relevant GPRS router in the appliance. This is performed via static IP addressing services which are currently only provided by Wireless Logic in the United Kingdom.
Implementation of the solution has been fast - ISG and Wireless Logic have integrated the wireless technology within the existing infrastructure and technology. The result is that many of Kent Fire’s Appliances are making full use of this messaging solution and maintain always-on connectivity to the Central Control Centre that sends information and alerts to the appliances such as job despatch and traffic congestion.
In terms of cost, the mobile data communications solution has delivered real benefits and real cost savings over its previous solution at the same time reducing the brigades’ mobile voice bills.
“Everyone here agrees mobile real time messaging to appliances helps us work smarter, faster and enables us to maintain the high level of service the public have come to expect of us. This technology significantly adds value to our ability to do our job. Quite honestly, you begin to wonder how we ever worked without it”
Julian Gaskin, IT Systems Developer at the Kent Fire Brigade.
